ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Spend three weeks in Austria, Italy and Germany,
and learn how to write feature articles for regional and national
publication. Along the way, experience the musical, historical,
and cultural heritages of some of the finest cities in the
world: Vienna, the world capital of music; Salzburg, Mozart’s
home and setting for the movie The Sound of Music; Venice,
city by the sea; Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance;
and Rome, the cradle of Western Civilization.
Earn transferable college credits. The program includes a
multitude of extraordinary field trips in which you’ll
participate with your classmates to further enrich your studies
abroad. It should be noted: you need not be a current Orange
Coast College student to participate in this program, but
you must be at least 18 years old.
Orange Coast College Faculty
For more than 20 years, Scott Hays, M.A., has been a freelance
writer and author, and a media consultant in all facets of
business and consumer magazine publishing, involving a broad
range of experiences in editorial, marketing, and conference
development.
As a freelancer, he has written for TV Guide,
Men’s Health, Los Angeles Magazine, The
Los Angeles Times, Advertising Age, Men’s
Fitness, The Christian Science Monitor, The
Miami Herald, and The New York Daily News. He also
has authored or co-authored several nonfiction books for major
publishing houses, including Warner Books, Rodale Press, and
Barron’s, several children’s books.
Lately, though, Hays has also been working as an adjunct instructor
(English, Writing and Mass Communications courses) for UCI
(extension), Orange Coast College and Saddleback College.
At UCI, for example, he developed a 10-week course on freelance
writing for beginning, intermediate and advanced writers.
He also developed a 5-week course on writing for the Web,
and 5-week course that explores the literary journalism forms
and techniques used to make creative non-fiction stories read
like novels. For more information visit his website at www.ScottHays.com.
Enrollment Fees
An enrollment fee of $26 per unit must be paid to Orange Coast
College at the time of registration. Non-resident students
pay $175 per unit. This tuition is state mandated and subject
to change.
What about financial aid?
If you qualify for financial aid, funds awarded can be applied
to your Study Abroad experience. Deadlines are October 1 for
spring programs and June 1 for fall programs. Funds may not
be released until after the semester begins, so you will need
to make other arrangements for the payment of required fees.
Insurance
The International Student I.D. is included for the summer
in Austria, Italy and Germany. The card includes a very basic
sickness and accident insurance policy. In general, the limits
are $100 per day up to a maximum of 60 days for in-hospital
sickness expense. If you do not have a policy that will cover
you while abroad you will need to obtain supplemental medical
insurance. Students will be required to provide proof of medical
insurance prior to departure.
